Prof. Leo Lefebure on Fethullah Gulen and Gulen Movement

Professor Leo Lefebure of Georgetown University shared his remarks on the Gulen Movement, in the light of his experiences with the movement’s participants in multiple countries, namely Australia, India and Turkey. Among all, one aspect of the movement he has been particularly impressed with is its emphasis on high quality education and initiatives to make it available to those who, otherwise, wouldn’t be able to afford it. Second was the generosity of Hizmet (Gulen Movement) participants, which Lefebure has witnessed in person.

Widely praised throughout the early 2000s as a mild and moderate variation on Islamic political identity, the Gülen Movement has long been a topic of both adulation and conspiracy in Turkey, and has become more controversial as it spreads across the world. Hendrick suggests that when analyzed in accordance with its political and economic impact, the Gülen Movement, despite both praise and criticism, should be given credit for playing a significant role in Turkey’s rise to global prominence.
