Turkish students win Int’l Environmental Project Olympiad medal

Ahmet Kamil Dokumacı and Taha İkram Özsümbül, both students from Turkey’s private Samanyolu Science High School, won silver medals at the 22nd International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO) held in Nairobi.
The project, which focused on using pure halogen powder to detect volatile amines practically and quickly, secured the two students the number two spot in the world.
With 25 countries participating between April 28 and May 2, the qualifying projects were displayed at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC). INEPO’s aim is to emphasize the importance of youth and international cooperation, especially because environmental problems are global in reach, and to give young people opportunities to impact their environments.
Ata Kutad Karslı, Muhammed Tarık Göktaş and Onur Hamza Baş — also students from Samanyolu Science High School — won bronze medals at the International Energy Olympiad held in Houston, Texas. The project was based on an investigation of alkaline water, which, compared to other waters, shows the effects of plant growth. The conference, which was held at the George R. Brown Center, featured 385 qualified projects from 66 countries during the week of April 28.

Lawyers, academics say ‘parallel state’ was invented to block graft probe
A total of 150 academics signed the manifesto, titled “Rule of law suspended.” The manifesto says the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government cannot ignore the corruption allegations just by making up claims of a “parallel state” — which has no meaning in political science or law — and placing the blame on the Hizmet movement, which is inspired by Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, for its unlawful practices.

Did they make mistake?
We are experiencing a period of turmoil in which we strongly need the supremacy of law, the presumption of innocence and the individuality of criminal offenses. A grave campaign instead is being carried out to insult and denigrate millions of people. Why would the Hizmet movement consider forming a parallel state within the state given that its members hold no intention other than Allah’s will? Considering that democratic options are available for seeking positions within the state, why would people within the bureaucracy strive for greater political power?
