
Police carrying Kalashnikov rifles and inspectors from a number of government bodies raided 14 private and prep schools in Mardin province on Tuesday based on “reasonable suspicion” that the schools are involved in tax fraud, a move that comes as part of the government-orchestrated operation targeting the faith-based Gülen movement, popularly known as the Hizmet movement.

Turkish schools have been opened across the world by the Hizmet movement — also known as the Gülen movement — a faith-based movement inspired by Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen that promotes education with the aim of fostering interfaith and intercultural dialogue.

The awards were organized by the Turquoise Harmony Institute, a dialogue center inspired by prominent Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen to promote mutual understanding and exchange between people from different cultures and religions.

An organization called the Law and Democracy Foundation which was established by lawyer Mehmet Ali Canlı, a Justice and Development Party (AK Party) hopeful in the June 7 general election, on Wednesday filed a criminal complaint against media organizations that publish the speeches of Fethullah Gülen, a renowned Islamic scholar.
