The Bedir Turkish High School in Mogadishu, Kıblenuma Elementary School, Kıblenuma Girl’s School and Somaliland Vifak Turkish School in the country offer modern vocational training for Somali children as well as winning medals in international contests, leading to increased hopes for a better future in the country.
Attaching great importance to education in Somalia, Turkish schools play a significant role in rebuilding the country’s collapsed education system with the support of the Somali government.
Somali Higher Education and Culture Minister Duale Adam Mohamed emphasized Turkish schools’ contribution to the Somali people and students, saying, “These successful schools have renewed our hopes regarding the future of Somalia.”
Mogadishu Bedir Turkish School Principal Bilal Köse stressed that the school began its activities in 2011 with 40 students in poor conditions, adding: “We have 450 students in our schools now. FourteenTurkish, six Somali and two Egyptian teachers are serving in the schools. They are architects of such important success. With the medals that they won in two years, these students honor Somalia.”
Kimse Yok Mu and MASFED to open hospital in Ethiopia
The rough construction of the 40-bed Harari Hospital is finished, but the final outfitting of the facility is still under way. Hospital officials stated that they hope to be ready to open very soon. The hospital was built with funding provided through donations, and charitable contributions will also be the source of its ongoing support. A total of 50 medical healthcare personnel from both Turkey and Ethiopia will serve the people in the Turkish hospital.
Erdoğan’s African mission and dismantling Turkish schools
How do Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s repeated calls for the closure of Turkish schools located on the African continent, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, serve Turkish national interests? It appears that Fethullah Gülen, a U.S.-based Islamic preacher from Turkey who promotes peace and tolerance, and the schools associated with his religious Hizmet movement can’t get a break. Now, Gülen’s schools are being targeted in his home country by the Turkish government’s ruling Justice and Development Party, known as the AKP, which should dispel any notion in the U.S. that the AKP is somehow in cahoots with the Gülen movement.
As Gulen movement contracts in Africa, worry over who will fill the vacuum
Abdallah Kheri, who in Kenya heads the Islamic Research and Education Trust, worries that shuttering Gulen schools and other institutions could leave a vacuum that the so-called Islamic State will seek to fill. “Closing down the institutions would definitely grant gains to the fundamentalists,” he said. In Kenya, the Rev. Wilybard Lagho, Mombasa Roman Catholic diocese vicar general, said he would lament the demise of Gulen schools.
