Interview with Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, at London Premiere of Love is a Verb

Love is a Verb is a documentary by Terry Spencer Hesser exploring the ordinary lives and stories of people in Hizmet, a social movement inspired by the Islamic scholar and teacher, Fethullah Gülen, and geared towards serving all people regardless of their faith and religion through dialogue, education and relief work. The documentary was narrated by Hollywood actress Ashley Judd and produced by Global Vision Productions.

At a time when terrorist groups command world attention through their brutal acts that they claim to be committing in the name of Islam, we believe it is most timely to explore the works and activities of ordinary people in Hizmet (literally meaning ‘service’) whose source of inspiration is Islam yet whose aims, values, practices and activities are not just entirely different but diametrically opposed to those of the murderous terrorists mentioned above. As Hizmet grows in over 160 countries through dialogue, education and relief work, seeing the movement through the lens of Terry Spencer is an opportunity for anyone interested in exploring the human-stories around a faith-inspired (in motivation) yet faith-neutral (in activities and inclusiveness) movement growing worldwide.

The London premiere of Love is a Verb was organised by the Centre for Hizmet Studies and Dialogue Society. It took place at the Leicester Square Empire Cinema on 4th November 2014. New interviews with members of the audience will be released in the coming days and weeks.

Praising the Turkish schools operating in seven Nigerian provinces, Shekarau said his three children had graduated from the Turkish schools, adding that high-quality education provided at these schools is a “wonderful example” for other schools in Nigeria. Expressing his gratitude to Turkish educators and entrepreneurs for their contributions to Nigerian education, Shekarau said, “I will always feel indebted to the Turkish schools.”

Criticism and risks

For understandable reasons, governments don’t like to be criticized. But all governments tend to make mistakes. Even if governments and administrations do not like to be criticized, criticizing their mistakes is both a right and a responsibility. It is a moral duty. The criteria for this criticism include fairness, constructiveness and the avoidance of libel and defamation. Damaging the prestige of people, groups, organizations or firms is not criticism.

Zaman school [in Cambodia] resists call for closure

Zaman school officials and parents yesterday urged the Cambodian government not to shutter the schools as the Turkish Ambassador to Cambodia Ilhan Tug has requested, saying students will ultimately suffer. Officials would also need to consider legal and administrative procedures, and so far, the schools have not violated any Cambodian law or regulation, he said.

Saylorsburg protesters focus on Turkish cleric

As a corruption investigation embroils the prime minister of Turkey and the country’s ruling party, protesters descended for a third time on Saylorsburg against Turkish cleric Fethullah Gülen. But Alp Aslandogan, spokesman for Gülen’s movement, said the protesters’ views are contradictory. He said Erdogan has blamed Gülen for the investigation, so protesters are supporting the ruling party by protesting Gülen now.
