İSTANBUL

Dismayed by unconstructive language adopted by government officials over social issues, Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullan Gülen offered his deep condolences to family of Berkin Elvan, the latest victim of Gezi Park protests, in a statement late on Tuesday.

Persistence for pursuing plans to build a mall, according to Gülen, was the biggest cause of the exacerberating of developments that culminated in loss of young lives during Gezi protests. The social unrest might have been defused and cooled down if the politicians didn’t appeal to polarizing language that alienated significant segments of the society, said Gülen, pointing to lack of common sense among political establishment.

Gülen‘s full statement:

“We’re passing through difficult days when the raison d’etat (reason of the state), which should have been knotted with common sense and reconciliation, is defeated by anger and rancor. This atmosphere of hatred undermines efforts to understand one another as well as love and stability that the country needs these days. It also reinforces a bellicose rhetoric from top to the bottom. Instead of taking steps to calm the events kicked off by an obsession to build a shopping mall, the flames of the incidents fanned through a polarizing language and caused the death of a number of our youth. 15 years old Berkin Elvan is the latest victim of this atmosphere.

I express condolences to family and relatives of Elvan family and pray for all the best patience for our Alevi brothers, who have suffered a lot of pain until today but were successful in maintaining their restraint and remained alert.”

Turkey’s latest bombing will help its president amass more power

Mr Erdogan likes to cast himself as a cure for the chaos spreading across Turkey. Yet he is also one of its causes. Courting the nationalist vote, Mr Erdogan has ruled out peace talks with the PKK. Responding to PKK attacks against security targets in 2015, he inflamed the conflict by arresting Kurdish politicians, pulverising towns in the southeast, and displacing some 500,000 people.

Mosque-cemevi project halted due to government’s ‘parallel paranoia’

Turkey’s first-ever complex housing both a mosque and a cemevi, an Alevi house of worship, has become the latest victim in the battle launched by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government against the Gülen movement after the Mamak Municipality refused to grant a certificate of occupancy to the complex on the grounds that it was built with “parallel funds.”

Erdoğan: both asset and liability for AKP

“Very few people in Turkey could deny that the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government under the leadership of Tayyip Erdoğan has made a tremendous and positive transformation in the country. Now, he is on it again with his insistence on trying to close down tutorial centers that belong to the private sector. Everybody knows that with this he is trying to punish the Hizmet movement, which has resisted pledging absolute loyalty to him.
