The 26th meeting of “Covering Turkey:” the past, present and future of prep schools

Medialog platform, which is part of the Journalists and Writers Foundation, has just announced that the 26th meeting of covering Turkey will be held on November 26, 2013 to discuss the past, present and future of prep schools.
The meeting will address this highly debated issue in Turkish socio-political context.
Participants will discuss the issue on educational, social and political dimensions and try to examine the reasons put to the fore by the government to shut them down and the possible implications of such a decision.
Considering the technical dimension of the issue, the organizers invited someone with an extensive experience on prep-schooling; Faruk Ardıç. Faruk Ardıç is the head of college guidance and counseling department for FEM publishing, which is the largest prep school network in the Hizmet (Gulen) Movement.
Frequently appearing on various TV channels on educational issues Mr. Ardıç gave countless seminars and wrote articles and books on guidance and counseling.
Indeed, the word genocide brings to our minds mass killings and relocations of members of a race, usually under war-like conditions. Yet, genocide is not a war crime. It is not a type of crime committed against a specific race. Rather, it has wider connotations. This crime may be committed against a specific group, without massacring them and in a peaceful setting.

The agenda of the Turkish authorities [against Hizmet] goes far beyond the attempted coup, it is about the need to neutralise a movement that became a political threat when its followers within the judiciary and police started exposing corruption within the government’s ruling inner circle in December 2013.
Gülen urges Turkey to preserve, advance achievements in democratization
Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen has called for the preservation and advancement of the country’s achievements in democratization, describing this as “crucial.” In an interview with The Atlantic magazine, Gülen said Turkey’s ongoing relationship with the European Union is partly to be commended for the level of democratization Turkey has achieved so far.

One of the main reasons behind the loss of momentum in Turkey’s once-intense efforts to boost relations with African states is the Turkish government’s effort to win domestic battles at any cost. In one such attempt, the Turkish government started to work on a plan to get states to close down Turkish schools abroad that are affiliated with the Hizmet movement, which is inspired by the teachings of Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen and known as one of Turkey’s most important soft-power instruments.
