Representatives of more than 60 countries attended a panel discussion organized by the İstanbul-based Journalists and Writers Foundation (GYV) at UN headquarters in New York.

The panel titled “Development Agenda: Contributions of Private Sector and Civil Society” and sponsored by Peace Islands Institute (PII) and the African Union was attended by ministers, academics, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs, opinion leaders and NGO leaders from 60 countries.

Speaking in a morning session, Central African Republic Education Minister Eloi Anguimate underlined the contribution of the civil society to development of countries through education. Stating that it is impossible to achieve sustainable development only through the hands of the state without the support of the civil society and private sector, in this regard, Anguimate praised the activities of the Gülen movement, a civil society movement inspired by Turkish-Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen which is active throughout the world including Central African Republic.

Noting that he traveled to Turkey two months ago and he had talks with officials from Turkish charity Kimse Yok Mu (Is Anybody There?), which is also affiliated with the Gülen (Hizmet) movement, the Central African minister said he asked them to open more educational institutions in his country, which he said provides high-quality education.

The minister underlined that education is needed not just for development but also to establish peace and stability in the country, adding that chaos, violence and migrant tragedies witnessed in various countries across the world can only be prevented through education.

GYV Deputy President Hüseyin Hurmalı also delivered a speech during the panel, saying the GYV has contributed to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 ahead of this year’s summit. Stating that UN’s Sustainable Development Program includes goals to improve cooperation of the state institutions with private sector, Hurmalı said the Hizmet movement has already achieved these goals in its activities across the world. “We organized this panel to share inputs and outcomes on this issue,” he added.

The Gülen movement is a group of volunteers engaged in interfaith and intercultural dialogue inspired by the ideas of Gülen, whose teachings promote mutual understanding and tolerance between cultures. Now residing in the US, Gülen has pioneered educational activities in a number of countries, along with efforts to promote intercultural and interfaith activities around the world.

Turkey, ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ and ‘Titanic’

Questions to challenge the primary and unjustified premise: What judicial (or other) process determined that these corruption investigations were a coup attempt against the government? What proof or evidence do you have to support this most serious claim? What disciplinary process did you undertake to determine that the people that were purged were members and culprits of this ‘coup’? In the absence of evidence and disciplinary process how did you determine these people’s association with Hizmet? When is government corruption not a judicial coup? How can you have the right to unilaterally determine the intent and purpose of these ongoing judicial investigations when your government is implicated in them? If your government can purge over 7,000 police officers (and thereby affect and prevent these investigations) without evidence, due process or disciplinary procedure, do you not set a precedent for every future potentially corrupt government to follow?

The [Gulen] movement was a shade

The faithful people of Anatolia who were alienated for many years, educated and trained themselves with the scope given by the “leader” of the movement. They sacrificed and worked a lot in order to get to those governmental positions. They got to these positions with their great effort and labor. They utilized these positions for God`s sake, for their homeland and their nation.

Erdogan also made a statement, calling the president of the United States “Barack,” before launching into one of his usual self-serving rants. Typical of a violent Islamist appropriating the moral high ground, the Turkish president agreed that fighting terrorism is of utmost importance. But the “terrorists” to whom he mainly referred were Gulen and the Kurds.

Domestic Violence and Smoking According to Gulen

Gülen’s says, “Women beaten by their husbands should seek a divorce if they have no children. Beating is an unjustifiable physical attack and is a crime. If the smoker is a father, his nonsmoking wife or children should be able to launch such a lawsuit”
