West Hartford State Representative Andy Fleischmann (D-18) recently received the “Statesman of the Year Award” for his contributions to education and environmental causes.

Fleischmann was honored at the 5th Annual Friendship Dinner and Awards Ceremonies, which was held in Hartford on March 26.

“I’m deeply honored to have been selected to receive this recognition from the Peace Island Institute, an organization that is committed to protecting children, safeguarding the environment, and promoting peaceful coexistence,” Fleischmann said in a statement.

The Friendship Dinner is organized by Peace Islands Institute (PII), a non-profit organization that promotes peace, cross-cultural tolerance, and human dignity by showing support to select individuals and institutions in Connecticut that work toward promoting unity, education, welfare and progress. The group supports practices to achieve world peace by creating the realms of peaceful coexistence, or “peace islands”.

“We are pleased to have presented Rep. Andrew Fleischmann with our ‘Statesperson of the Year’ award for his contributions to environmental awareness and the educational field,” said Mehmet Erdogdu, Director of the Peace Island Institute’s Connecticut Chapter.

In the midst of this time of crisis and opportunity, my question tonight is this: What is the future of religion in the new world order that is painfully emerging in our times?  How can religion support—and constructively critique—this new international order? I personally believe, very deeply, that God is raising up leaders in every […]

Gaza group: Oppression targeting Kimse Yok Mu harms needy the most

Gaza Peace Volunteers Association Chairman Dr. Nasser al-Sadi has expressed his frustration at a recent government decision to cancel the Turkish charity Kimse Yok Mu’s (Is Anybody There?) permission to collect donations for the rest of the year, saying that the charity’s ongoing flow of aid to many regions in Turkey and abroad, including Gaza, has now come to a halt.

Millions of people have asked for interview with Gülen

We realized it was not only millions of people in Turkey but also the world who were paying attention to what Gülen had to say. The interest in the Gülen interview also confirmed the universal dimension and vision of the Hizmet movement.

Turkish Extradition Request Could Strain Relations With US

The news that Turkey will officially request that the United States extradite Turkish Islamic scholar Fetullah Gulen is threatening to strain U.S.-Turkish relations. Ankara insists Gulen is behind a conspiracy to overthrow the government. But analysts warn that Ankara may find it difficult legally to secure his extradition.

Secretary Kerry insists Turkey must provide legal, solid evidence against Fethullah Gulen

We’ve never had a formal request for extradition, and we have always said, “give us the evidence, show us the evidence”. We need a solid, legal foundation that meets the standard of extradition in order for our courts to approve such a request.

What do Alevis want?

Alevis have been traditionally considering themselves a minority because their interpretation of Islam differs from the state’s understanding. In such a climate, the Abant Platform organized [a Gulen Movement affiliated organization] a three-day-long meeting by Lake Abant over the weekend, bringing representatives from the Alevi and Sunni community. Personally, I learned a lot from the meeting which almost served as a channel for venting for Alevis.
