West Hartford State Representative Andy Fleischmann (D-18) recently received the “Statesman of the Year Award” for his contributions to education and environmental causes.

Fleischmann was honored at the 5th Annual Friendship Dinner and Awards Ceremonies, which was held in Hartford on March 26.

“I’m deeply honored to have been selected to receive this recognition from the Peace Island Institute, an organization that is committed to protecting children, safeguarding the environment, and promoting peaceful coexistence,” Fleischmann said in a statement.

The Friendship Dinner is organized by Peace Islands Institute (PII), a non-profit organization that promotes peace, cross-cultural tolerance, and human dignity by showing support to select individuals and institutions in Connecticut that work toward promoting unity, education, welfare and progress. The group supports practices to achieve world peace by creating the realms of peaceful coexistence, or “peace islands”.

“We are pleased to have presented Rep. Andrew Fleischmann with our ‘Statesperson of the Year’ award for his contributions to environmental awareness and the educational field,” said Mehmet Erdogdu, Director of the Peace Island Institute’s Connecticut Chapter.

Love is A Verb – forthcoming documentary on the Gülen Movement

Love Is A Verb is an examination of a social movement of Sufi-inspired Sunni Muslims that began in Turkey in the l960s and now spans across the globe. The group is called Hizmet, the Turkish word for “service” or The Gülen Movement after its inspiration and teacher, Fethullah Gülen, a man TIME magazine named as one of the most influential leaders in the world in 2013 for “…preaching a message of tolerance.”

Academics praise Gülen’s contribution to world peace at symposium in Washington D.C.

Speaking at a conference titled “The Hizmet Movement and Peacebuilding” in Washington, D.C., at the weekend, prominent professors praised peace initiatives inspired by Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen as a great contribution to world peace. Numerous academics and scientists from more than 20 countries delivered speeches on various topics covering the impact of the Hizmet movement on society and its contributions to it as a whole.
