İSTANBUL

Dismayed by unconstructive language adopted by government officials over social issues, Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullan Gülen offered his deep condolences to family of Berkin Elvan, the latest victim of Gezi Park protests, in a statement late on Tuesday.

Persistence for pursuing plans to build a mall, according to Gülen, was the biggest cause of the exacerberating of developments that culminated in loss of young lives during Gezi protests. The social unrest might have been defused and cooled down if the politicians didn’t appeal to polarizing language that alienated significant segments of the society, said Gülen, pointing to lack of common sense among political establishment.

Gülen‘s full statement:

“We’re passing through difficult days when the raison d’etat (reason of the state), which should have been knotted with common sense and reconciliation, is defeated by anger and rancor. This atmosphere of hatred undermines efforts to understand one another as well as love and stability that the country needs these days. It also reinforces a bellicose rhetoric from top to the bottom. Instead of taking steps to calm the events kicked off by an obsession to build a shopping mall, the flames of the incidents fanned through a polarizing language and caused the death of a number of our youth. 15 years old Berkin Elvan is the latest victim of this atmosphere.

I express condolences to family and relatives of Elvan family and pray for all the best patience for our Alevi brothers, who have suffered a lot of pain until today but were successful in maintaining their restraint and remained alert.”

Fethullah Gulen’s opinion on Turkey today

“As the coup attempt unfolded, I fiercely denounced it and denied any involvement,” wrote Gulen, who has been living in self-exile in the US since 1999. “Furthermore, I said that anyone who participated in the putsch betrayed my ideals. Nevertheless, and without evidence, Erdogan immediately accused me of orchestrating it from 5,000 miles away.

South Africa is not a hunting ground for Erdogan

South Africans know what it means to be detained without trial and tortured. With that history in mind, the ANC-led government is not about to extradite a list of Turkish expats working in South Africa to Turkey, where their detention and torture is likely.

Which is the bigger threat, Turkey’s coup or Erdogan’s response?

Erdogan’s counter-coup may do more to change Turkish politics than the coup plotters ever sought, completing the country’s transformation from secular democracy to what’s fast becoming the new favorite government for aspiring dictators — one where the media is strictly controlled, conformity is entrenched through the schools, elections bring little change, and presidents can rule for life.
