Journalists and Writers Foundation to discuss girls’ education in Afghanistan

The Journalists and Writers Foundation (GYV) is due to hold a panel on the topic of education of Afghan girls, in New York City on March 18.
The panel will be held within the framework of the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, which will be dedicated to the Afghanistan’s struggles and progress toward educating girls. They will consider global political efforts to improve the education of girls, specifically how public and private institutes might enable the girls to pursue and complete their education. In addition, the panel will host various experts who have been studying the educational situation of girls in Afghanistan.
Two speakers joining the panel as United Nations representatives will talk about the projects and brief the audience about the educational targets established by the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). GYV is also planning to sponsor an educational project to contribute to Afghan-Turkish colleges in Afghanistan.

Fethullah Gulen on a Global Scale
James C. Harrington, founder [director] of the Texas Civil Rights Project and professor at the University of Texas at Austin Law School, spoke to a crowd of students, lawyers, judges, and local business people about his new book: Wrestling with Free Speech, Religious Freedom, and Democracy in Turkey: The Political Trials and Times of Fethullah Gulen. Harrington discussed recent changes in Turkey’s legal structure as part of the Gulen Institute’s ongoing lecture series, pointing to the result of the Fethullah Gulen trial as a pivotal victory in the nation’s struggle for civil liberties.
Micro-Finance and Vocational Training for Empowerment of Women
Peace Islands Institute and Kimse Yok Mu held a panel discussion on “Micro-Finance and Vocational Training For Empowerment of Women” on the occasion of the 59th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Mehmet Kilic, Director of Peace Islands Institute’s Center for Global Affairs, served as moderator for a panel of speakers from diverse backgrounds and experience in humanitarian relief, pharmaceutical, and politics.
Why won’t Obama extradite Gulen?
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he had complained to President Barack Obama about Fethullah Gulen in phone conversation. Erdogan added that Obama had responded favorably. The White House retorted in unusual language, telling journalists: “The response attributed to President Obama is not accurate.”
US Unlikely to ‘Speed Up’ Gulen’s Extradition to Turkey
Turkey has formally requested that the U.S. government extradite Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen from the state of Pennsylvania where he has lived in self-imposed exile for 17 years. Turkey is pushing for quick extradition, suggesting that U.S.-Turkish relations are at stake. But the burden of proof rests squarely on Ankara, and if it cannot sufficiently prove its accusations against Gulen, the extradition request will be refused.
