MÜMTAZ’ER TÜRKÖNE
The prime minister is striving wholeheartedly to continue a war he has already lost. His remarks do not reflect a strategy or political plan.
They reflect anger and a desire for revenge. Suppose that he destroyed the entire [Hizmet] movement. What good would that do him? Would such a move end his troubles? He is frittering away his 11 years in power and his popular appeal to exit the swamp into which he’s fallen. It is impossible to do so with such a heavy burden on his back. “Where will the public support behind him go?” is a quite different question; but he has no way of surmounting the high wall built by the law before him. This is a very serious corruption case, and the prime minister explicitly admits the corruption. If a statement appearing in the Cumhuriyet daily, where the prime minister was quoted as saying that the “money used [in corruption] belongs to the state, not the people” reflects the truth, then this is a clear acknowledgement of wrongdoing.

One thing I haven’t mentioned is the fact that the school engages with the families of all its students, and that fact was evident in the way the students engaged with their teachers and each other. I have never seen a bunch of adolescent girls with such nice manners, warm self-confidence and eagerness to learn and succeed.

A new book, Renewing Islam by Service, by Dr. Pim Valkenberg has been published by Catholic University Press, which offers a theological account of the contemporary Turkish faith-based service movement started by Fethullah Gülen, and placed against the backdrop of changes in modern Turkish society. In the first two chapters, Pim Valkenberg includes stories of his personal experiences with supporters of this movement, in a number of different countries, when he focuses on the dialogue-minded Turkish Muslims in the Netherlands.
Gülen’s lawyer says claims of luxury homes part of smear campaign
Gülen’s lawyer, Orhan Erdemli, denied the allegations, saying the claims are fabricated and were made up as part of a smear campaign against his client. According to Erdemli, Gülen adopts a modest lifestyle and pays rent for his room in a house in Pennsylvania where he lives.

Is this corruption scandal backed by the US?
The government has developed a two-stage strategy in order to manage this scandal. The first stage was to blame foreign powers. The second stage was to declare the Gülen community as the representative of these foreign powers in the country and thereby put the blame on the Gülen community.
