…Just as all Muslims must oppose the ideology of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), vicious terrorist groups that plan to overthrow governments in Muslim nations and establish a caliphate based on their perverted interpretation of Islam, Turks must also confront efforts by Erdoğan and his ideological allies to turn this great country into a bastion for a hypocritical authoritarian regime that simply abuses Islamic references to sustain its power.

Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, the key moderate mainstream Muslim leader, has become Erdoğan’s main target because Gülen is leading the charge in the battle to counter the extremist ideology of political Islamists. With his strong, principled stand rooted in solid and clear religious references, Gülen exposed the hypocrisy of Erdoğan’s political Islamist regime, which had promised to root out corruption, favoritism and mismanagement in Turkey, as well as adventurism and interference abroad.

Erdoğan lost his credibility and the trust of the people amid tightening political oppression and increasingly partisan governance in Turkey. His long-running cunning game is over. In a futile attempt, he is trying to hold on to power for fear of being defenseless in the face of potential charges in the future for constitutional crimes and criminal acts.

Turkey’s ‘black box’ must be opened

The recent debate on tutoring centers and private prep schools and the shocking revelations on the dirty warfare used in the 1990s against the Kurdish population are certainly parts of this pressure-cooker-like mood. It is obvious that “Erdoğan’s Way” of running the country is based on keeping tension just under control, so that it will serve his own ambitions to cement personal power.

What would Carl Schmitt say about Turkish politics today?

The Hizmet movement has been identified as a “domestic enemy” collaborating with foreign forces and legal and political channels were used as a tool to deal with this “enemy” after the corruption scandal became public. Thousands of policemen were reassigned and the government has taken important steps to place the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) under the control of the executive branch, which is totally at odds with rule of law.

Kanter: You need to know what is going on in Turkey

Question: You are being called a terrorist by Turkish government. What is your opinion on the widespread use of this term by the Government? Kanter: This is a term that many governments are using to scare people and get public support. No one likes terrorists — so if you brand your opponents as terrorists it’s easy to get support. The Turkish government has even accuses the US of being terrorist sponsors, they are a joke now.
