Ergenekon opinion lists subversive plans for coup d’état

A lead prosecutor involved in the trial of the Ergenekon terrorist organization listed in his final opinion of the case several plots by the terrorist group to spark chaos in society so as to lay the groundwork for a military coup.

Prosecutor Mehmet Ali Pekgüzel presented his final opinion in the Ergenekon case to a panel of judges at the İstanbul 13th High Criminal Court on Monday. The prosecutor seeks life imprisonment for 64 defendants and up to 15 years each for 96 others.

In his final opinion, the prosecutor said the Ergenekon terrorist group sought to spark chaos in society through 17 subversive plans that it hoped would lay the groundwork for a coup d’état. The plans included plots to assassinate several leading figures in the country as well as to discredit the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government in the eyes of the people through television and Internet publications.

One such plan was the Action Plan to Fight Reactionaryism, which detailed a military campaign to destroy the image of the ruling AK Party and the faith-based Gulen movement in the eyes of the public, to play down the Ergenekon investigation and to win support for members of the military being tried in the Ergenekon case. The plan included plots to frame innocent people linked to the Gulen movement and the AK Party through such methods as planting arms and ammunition in their homes. In his speech at the opening of the first session, Prof. Seyfettin Yuksel said: “If it had been said a few years ago that we would be discussing ‘Turkey’s direction’ in the coming years, none of us would have believed it. We were sure about Turkey’s direction.” Unfortunately, nowadays Turkey’s direction is seen as uncertain, and the country has strayed not only from its foreign policy but also from democratic norms and the rule of law in its domestic policies. The system is the root cause of corruption

We have the perfect recipe for all kinds of corruption. The media has been silenced. It does not work as a watchdog, inspecting the government’s financial dealings. Parliament cannot inspect the government’s financial transactions. The Court of Accounts (Sayıştay) cannot inspect the government’s expenses. There are no internal mechanisms within the ruling party to make sure its leaders are accountable; there is only an infallible leader figure, and whatever he does, the party endorses it.

Why Gulen Should Not Be Extradited

To extradite Gulen would not only imply a high chance of an unfair trial, but would also sound the death knell of a blueprint for global peace. Gulen’s ideas have all the potential for a global approach to peace-building. John L. Esposito, a professor at Georgetown University and a highly respected expert on Islam, called Gulen’s initiatives “extraordinarily unique”, and suggested it would be “wise” for other Muslim movements to emulate them.

We the pious did not feel for the suffering of the Kurds

There’s even a television channel named “Dunya TV” founded by Fethullah Gulen’s followers and it broadcasts in Kurdish. An attorney in our Abant Meeting said he’s had some suspicions about our sincerity but he said the atmosphere in the meeting has persuaded him.
