Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen has extended his condolences to victims of the violence in Egypt that resulted after a military crackdown on two camps housing supporters of the country’s ousted president.
The Egyptian Health Ministry put the latest death toll at 638 and said the number of injured in the Wednesday’s violence also has risen to 3,994.
Wednesday’s violence began when police moved to clear two protest camps housing mainly Islamist protesters calling for Mohammed Morsi’s reinstatement. The crackdown prompted clashes elsewhere in Cairo and other cities.
Gülen recalled that the aggrieved Islamic world is now “being shaken” by events in Egypt and that lamented that the bloodshed and tears have no impact on the international community.
He said it is also sad that “we have no capability to stop all this despotism.” He said the only thing “we can do is to pray,” extending condolences to the Egyptian people.

“They were a family of thinkers,” said a dairy farmer in the village who asked not to be named as he feared repercussions from the authorities. “They were good people. They came from nowhere, they had no water, nothing,” he says, pointing out the Gulen family’s former home, made from clay and rocks.
A Muslim voice to be heeded
The majority of Muslims openly and loudly reject violent extremism regardless of the religious or ethnic identity of the perpetrator, but that is not what the Western media focuses on. If we closely look into a broad poll, we will see hundreds of Muslim leaders denouncing terrorism, and one of these Muslim voices that we don’t listen to is Fethullah Gülen.
