Gülen’s solution to Kurdish issue discussed at panel

A solution to the Kurdish issue proposed by Turkish religious figure Fethullah Gülen has been discussed at a symposium in the southeastern province of Bingöl.
Prof. Cengiz Yıldız spoke at the “Kurds from Ottoman to Today” symposium and gave a presentation describing a solution to the Kurdish issue as put forward by Gülen, daily Zaman reported today. “According to Gülen, a superior goal can only be achieved through legitimate means. A Muslim who wants to recieve God’s grace cannot kill any person, no matter who. A terrorist cannot be a Muslim, a Muslim cannot be a terrorist,” he said.
“The revival of the spirit of fraternity would only be possible through religion,” he said. “The issue should not be approached with yelling and screaming, burning and killing, but rather through reasoning, compassion and understanding.”
In its conclusion, the symposium, which ran for three days at Bingöl University, stated that the Turkish state had started to approach the Kurdish issue with “compassion,” even though “many mistakes were done in the past.”
The statement continued: “Initiatives such as TRT6 [which broadcasts in Kurdish] and education in mother tongue can not be hampered by provacative actions.”
Questions to challenge the primary and unjustified premise: What judicial (or other) process determined that these corruption investigations were a coup attempt against the government? What proof or evidence do you have to support this most serious claim? What disciplinary process did you undertake to determine that the people that were purged were members and culprits of this ‘coup’? In the absence of evidence and disciplinary process how did you determine these people’s association with Hizmet? When is government corruption not a judicial coup? How can you have the right to unilaterally determine the intent and purpose of these ongoing judicial investigations when your government is implicated in them? If your government can purge over 7,000 police officers (and thereby affect and prevent these investigations) without evidence, due process or disciplinary procedure, do you not set a precedent for every future potentially corrupt government to follow?
Operation against whom?
A claim made this past weekend by Hüseyin Gülerce, a senior columnist for the Zaman daily, affiliated with the Gülen (Hizmet) movement, increased tensions in Ankara when he suggested that a major operation will be carried out by the government against the Gülen movement, which it believes to be behind the graft investigation.

International panel on Virgin Mary held in Istanbul
The international panel entitled “The Virgin Mary in the Holy Bible and the Holy Qur’an” jointly organized by Journalists and Writers Foundation’s Intercultural Dialogue Platform (KADIP), Roma Tevere Instituto and Izmir Intercultural Dialogue Center took place in Istanbul. In the final declaration of the panel, it was noted that the Virgin Mary who broke many discriminative taboos of her time played a significant role throughout history in placing women in the status they deserve.
