65-year-old grandmother looking after twin babies as mother, father in jail for 5 months
Date posted: March 22, 2017
Twin daughters of the Istanbul-based Şengün family were handed over to their 65-year-old grandmother as both E. Şengün and his wife F. were arrested after being kept under detention for 30 days, on Nov. 2, 2016.
The children were only 7-months-old when their parents were jailed and they are about to turn one with no father or mother in company.
The couple was detained, after an anonymous complaint, as part of a post-coup investigation into the Gülen movement and E. Şengün was reportedly subjected to beating in detention.
Şengün was an active teacher before she took a maternal leave to give birth to the twins last year. Now, her breastmilk has dried up reportedly due to poor conditions and the depressive period she has been going through in the prison. The grandmother no longer takes children to their mom for breastfeeding.
Meanwhile, E. Şengün suffered from loss in weight due to the similar reasons.
According to Aktifhaber news portal, the grandmother wants at least release of the twins’ mother as she has been having difficulties in looking after the babies on her own.
Turkey’s AKP planning to blame Hizmet movement for Deep State’s crimes
Online government whistleblower Fuat Avni has claimed that the government is concocting a plan to blame the clandestine assassinations of the ‘deep state’ and the violent domestic acts planned by the National Intelligence Agency (MİT) on the Hizmet movement.
The Gülen Movement and Turkish Soft Power*
The Gülen approach to education aptly demonstrates the group’s global strategy—Gülen movement schools are open to both Turkish migrants and citizens of host countries, and they avoid advancing a religious agenda. These schools aim to help Turkish migrants succeed in their host societies without losing sight of their Turkish roots, and at the same time they promote social unity by serving the needs of migrants and local students alike. The success of Gülen movement schools stems both from the success of the students (and the satisfaction of the parents) and from the prestige and goodwill they enjoy among local and political authorities for promoting integration and acting as a social mediator.
Newly launched book tells stories of purge victims after Turkey’s July 15 coup
A recently published book tells the stories of people who, following a military coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016, were victims of a government-led crackdown carried out under the pretext of an anti-coup fight.
Gulen: Issuance of arrest warrant changes nothing about my views
The issuance of an arrest warrant from a Turkish court changes nothing about my status or my views. I have repeatedly condemned the coup attempt in Turkey and denied any knowledge or involvement. It is well-documented the Turkish court system is without judicial independence, so this warrant is yet another example of President Erdogan’s drive authoritarianism and away from democracy.
Gülen’s lawyer files libel suit against Interior Minister Ala
Albayrak stated in the petition that unrealistic allegations and imputations, intended to defame his client Gülen, were made by Ala during his speech in Erzurum. Albayrak stated: “The expressions used by Ala cannot be considered within the scope of freedom of expression as they clearly violate the personal rights of Gülen.”
The Encyclopedia of Islam and hate speech
Erdoğan’s obvious target was Fethullah Gülen, but it is clear that he also attacked anyone who doesn’t think like him with phrases such as “false prophets,” “fake mystics” and “so-called scholars.” This denigration is problematic especially in terms of secularism. Indeed, the prime minister hurls gross insults at religious interpretations that diverge from his own. In his capacity as a prime minister, he imposes his beliefs and acts onto those who do not think like him. One step beyond these remarks would be the prime minister’s supporters’ resorting to violence against those he places on the bull’s eye.
