The International Justice Conference Hailed A Major Success

Prof. Manuel A. Knoll, from Department of Philosophy, Fatih University in partnership with the support of Abant Platform organized an international three day event regarding pluralism and conflict. Over 50 academicians from around the world got together for ‘Distributive Justice Beyond Rawls and Consensus’ Conference in Fatih University, Istanbul on June 6-8, 2013. Conference was attended by some of the well known scholars in their fields such as; Prof. Giovanni Giorgini, Bologna University, Prof. Harun Tepe, Hacettepe University, Prof. Ulrich Steinvorth, Hamburg University, and Prof. Jonathan Wolff, University College London.

Abant Platform believes strongly in engaging with intellectuals to contribute to the field of Justice. In today’s challenging environment in Turkey, it’s increasingly important for NGOs to partners with academia to work on justice to advance democracy and human rights. This conference featured distinguished speakers who discussed a variety of topics, ranging from conceptions of justice to social equality and severe disadvantage to pluralism and the idea of conflictual consensus.

First keynote speaker was the Vice President of Fatih University Fahrettin Gucin who welcomed the participants. Tolga Aksoy, Vice General Secretary of Abant Platform, informed guests about Journalists and Writers Foundations mission and its events. Prof. Manuel Knoll and Prof. Harun Tepe from Hacettepe University presented a paper on the historical background of the conception of Justice. Another keynote speaker Prof. Giovanni Giorgini presented a paper on ‘Imagination and Conflict: After Stuart Hampshire’ in the conference.

It is likely that the Gülen community will face restrictions and pressure from the government [as the AK Party government’s supporters have accused the Gülen movement of discrediting a number of ministers and their relatives in relation to a recent investigation into alleged bribery in public tenders, which saw the sons of three Cabinet ministers taken into custody alongside construction moguls and bureaucrats]. What we have been defending are universal rights, including the freedom of religion and belief. If these can be achieved, everybody will benefit from them, not just the Alevi community.

Germany Accuses Turkey Of ‘Unacceptable’ Spying Against Gülen Supporters

Boris Pistorius, the Interior Minister for Lower Saxony State of Germany, has accused Turkey of carrying out “unacceptable” spying on its soil. It is accused of conducting espionage in more than 200 associations and schools linked to supporters of Fethullah Gülen. Pistorius said the move was “intolerable and unacceptable.”

PM Erdoğan’s arguments on prep schools contradict statistics, facts

PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said during a live TV interview on Wednesday night that his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will not back down from its decision to close prep schools and listed his government’s arguments, many of which contradict official data, statistics and results of surveys carried out on the issue. According to surveys, 85 percent of the families who send their children to prep schools are low-income families.

Erdoğan’s overarching purge is not a road accident

The purge of the Hizmet Movement is what the Kurdish question was to Kemalism, a necessary tool with which to construct a new national identity, a tool to silence those who question it, and to design a social and political system that will foster it. Unfortunately, Turkey has no chance of going back, even to its fragile and dysfunctional democracy, without this narrative being completely rejected.
