The International Justice Conference Hailed A Major Success

Prof. Manuel A. Knoll, from Department of Philosophy, Fatih University in partnership with the support of Abant Platform organized an international three day event regarding pluralism and conflict. Over 50 academicians from around the world got together for ‘Distributive Justice Beyond Rawls and Consensus’ Conference in Fatih University, Istanbul on June 6-8, 2013. Conference was attended by some of the well known scholars in their fields such as; Prof. Giovanni Giorgini, Bologna University, Prof. Harun Tepe, Hacettepe University, Prof. Ulrich Steinvorth, Hamburg University, and Prof. Jonathan Wolff, University College London.

Abant Platform believes strongly in engaging with intellectuals to contribute to the field of Justice. In today’s challenging environment in Turkey, it’s increasingly important for NGOs to partners with academia to work on justice to advance democracy and human rights. This conference featured distinguished speakers who discussed a variety of topics, ranging from conceptions of justice to social equality and severe disadvantage to pluralism and the idea of conflictual consensus.

First keynote speaker was the Vice President of Fatih University Fahrettin Gucin who welcomed the participants. Tolga Aksoy, Vice General Secretary of Abant Platform, informed guests about Journalists and Writers Foundations mission and its events. Prof. Manuel Knoll and Prof. Harun Tepe from Hacettepe University presented a paper on the historical background of the conception of Justice. Another keynote speaker Prof. Giovanni Giorgini presented a paper on ‘Imagination and Conflict: After Stuart Hampshire’ in the conference.

Hate crimes get worse in Turkey

Terrorist PKK targets Gulen movement’s schools in Hakkari

Schools opened by the Gülen movement, inspired by internationally respected Turkish scholar Fethullah Gülen, in the eastern province of Hakkari are often threatened by the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), according to an interview by the T24 news portal. The first private school the Gülen movement in Hakkari was opened in 2007. There are currently 300 students at the school, Hatice Avcı College.

The real problem is not an AK Party-Gülen movement conflict

When the problem is not properly diagnosed, the treatment can’t be on the mark. Let us speak openly: while the problem may appear to be a struggle between children from the same neighborhood — the AK Party and the Gülen movement — the real problem is in fact one that concerns all of society: democracy and justice. And the only solution is to return to real democracy and the principles of the rule of law.

Hizmet and countering violent extremism

The Hizmet movement is in trouble in Turkey because of the increasingly despotic Justice and Development Party (AKP) regime’s persecution of its volunteers. But, ironically, this may be good for world peace.

Filling the gap left by Gulen

Erdogan and Gulen shared the goal of creating a “devout generation”. Yet despite their similar outlook on life and objectives, the Gulen movement never merged completely with the AKP. However, Gulen was never willing to subordinate himself to Erdogan, which is why the two men fell out in 2013 and the informal coalition with the Gulen movement collapsed.

It appears that Erdogan had never committed himself to a democratic form of government. A quote attributed to him in 1999 describes precisely what his real intentions were from the day he rose to power. “Democracy” he said, “is like a bus, when you arrive at your destination, you step off.”
