In Netherlans court orders parents to stop calling De Roos primary a terrorist school

Judges in Haarlem have banned four mothers from calling an Islamic primary school in Zaanstad a ‘terrorist’ school.
The school authorities went to court in an effort to stop parents who support Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan from using social media to say the school supports Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. Ankara blames Gülen from this summer’s failed military coup.
Some 150 children have been pulled out of the De Roos school since the online campaign against it started. A number of teachers have also left and the school has lost a large amount of its funding.
People who press ahead with saying the school supports terrorism face a fine of €1,000 with a maximum of €10,000. However, parents can continue to describe the school as a Gülen school and do not have to give up their Whatsapp group, the court said in its ruling. The school board denies it has any connection with the Gülen movement.
A Turkish political, non-governmental, civil society organisation, Hizmet Movement, has made commendable contributions in Nigeria’s socio-economic life. The movement, which began in the late 1960s, particularly focuses on education, charity and dialogue, which it believes are the remedies to ignorance, poverty and disunity.

A statement on the herkul.org website, which broadcasts weekly speeches of Gülen, said Gülen’s doors are open to everyone. “We are following the path of 13th-century Sufi philosopher and poet Rumi. Our hearts and doors are open to everyone. We have all kinds of tea and refreshments here. Freedom of expression and thought is what we have also been defending unless it contains insult.

Turkey’s Islamic camp is more diverse than one would think. In fact, the traditions that Erdoğan and Gülen come from have almost always been distinct and different from each. The former has been more explicitly Islamist, at times anti-Western and anti-Semitic. The latter, the line of Gülen, which goes back to scholar Said Nursi (1878-1960), has rather stayed closer to center-right parties and have been more friendly to the West and also other “Abrahamic” faiths.
