Turkish Islamic scholar and peace advocate Fethullah Gulen, who has been residing in Saylorsburg, PA since 1999, condemned the horrific terrorist attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport.

“Unfortunately, to be shaken by a terrorist attack and to be devastated by news of martyred security officers every morning has become routine in Turkey.

It is impossible to be optimistic in the current context in Turkey where terror and terrorists are not pursued, security experts are sacked out of political concerns, and fighting organized crime networks is not a top priority.

We can’t do anything except pray. Let’s lift our hands to pray during this blessed month of Ramadan when mercy and grace of God rains over humanity. May God protect our country from such similar troubles and tribulations, disperse the dark clouds that accumulated over the country and grant our people with patience and perseverance, and grant wisdom to those who govern.

I pray for mercy and forgiveness from God the Merciful for those who lost their lives in this horrific incident, domestic and foreign individuals, and for patience and perseverance for their loved ones, and for fast recovery for those who were wounded.”

When the masks have fallen

It seems that the judiciary will be forced to investigate the claims of a so-called illegal organization, and sham trials will be performed to intimidate the Hizmet movement and cover up the corruption claims that become public on Dec. 17, 2013, by taking tactics from the former Ergenekon supporters nested within the army, the bureaucracy, business circles, the media and the judiciary.

Reasons to be worried about Turkey’s direction

For the first time in the 11-year reign of the AK Party, I was truly concerned when Erdoğan last week said that the decision to shut down private prep schools was finalized despite heavy resistance from a significant portion of society. A government that could consider interfering with “freedom of enterprise” is grim enough.

Silencing Taraf daily

The liberal Taraf daily, where I write a column, is one of the few independent newspapers in this country. Those who don’t know the Turkish media well need to know that media outlets are largely owned by private holdings which have close ties to the government. Thus, Turkish newspapers need to consider whether their reporting would harm their bosses’ business connections with the government.
