Today marks the first anniversary of the passing of Fethullah Gülen (1941–2024)—a man whose life’s work continues to inspire millions across the world. His vision, rooted in deep faith and universal compassion, gave rise to the Hizmet Movement (“service” in Turkish), a civic initiative dedicated to education, dialogue, and community building.

Gülen lived in an era of extraordinary change—one defined by both unprecedented technological progress and growing moral confusion. In this context, he sought to remind humanity that knowledge without conscience, and power without compassion, lead only to division and destruction. His answer was Hizmet: a peaceful, volunteer-driven movement devoted to eradicating ignorance, poverty, and disunity through education, mutual respect, and service to others.

He believed that the true mission of human life is to serve God by serving humanity, and that the surest path to peace and prosperity lies in raising generations of educated, ethical, and empathetic individuals. For Gülen, education was not merely about academic achievement, but about cultivating character, empathy, and social responsibility.

Rather than pursuing political or ideological goals, Fethullah Gülen focused on cultivating “the golden generation”—individuals who would integrate scientific knowledge, moral depth, and social service into their lives, contributing positively to every society they touch.

Hizmet in the Context of Humanity’s Transformational Movements

Historical Movement or InventionGlobal ContributionHow the Hizmet Movement Builds Upon It
Agricultural RevolutionProvided food stability and enabled civilization.Hizmet nourishes intellectual and moral hunger through education, cultivating the stability that comes from knowledge and virtue.
Rule of Law and GovernanceEstablished justice and social order.Hizmet promotes ethical self-governance, encouraging individuals to act justly out of conscience rather than compulsion.
Religious and Ethical TraditionsAdvanced compassion, charity, and peace.Hizmet renews these values in civic form, inspiring faith-based service without sectarianism or coercion.
Age of Exploration & Global TradeConnected cultures and spread knowledge.Hizmet schools and dialogue centers act as an “intellectual Silk Road,” linking peoples through mutual respect and learning.
Industrial RevolutionGenerated material prosperity through innovation.Hizmet emphasizes moral wealth alongside material progress—training ethical entrepreneurs who innovate for humanity’s benefit.
Human Rights & Democratic MovementsSecured equality and freedom.Hizmet reinforces universal human values: equal access to education, empowerment of women, and civic participation.
Scientific & Technological RevolutionsSpread knowledge and communication.Hizmet blends scientific excellence with ethical responsibility, educating globally minded citizens with conscience.
Global Institutions for Peace (UN, WHO, etc.)Encouraged international cooperation.Hizmet fosters grassroots peace through dialogue, cultural exchange, and volunteerism—complementing formal diplomacy.
Environmental & Sustainability MovementsPromoted stewardship of the planet.Hizmet’s ethos of responsibility for creation (emanet) supports care for the environment and simplicity in living.
Digital & Global Education RevolutionDemocratized knowledge access.Hizmet anticipated this vision through global schools and online learning initiatives, bridging cultures with shared understanding.

What Makes the Hizmet Movement Unique

  1. Grassroots and Non-Political: Hizmet builds change from the bottom up, empowering ordinary citizens rather than pursuing political control.
  2. Integration of Faith and Reason: It unites scientific education with spiritual values, offering a model of balanced modernity.
  3. Global Yet Culturally Sensitive: Hizmet adapts to each local culture while maintaining universal ideals.
  4. Service-Centered Education: It views teaching and community service as sacred duties—the highest expression of faith.
  5. Dialogue and Cooperation: It seeks common ground among different faiths and cultures, embodying peace through personal relationships.

The Continuing Mission: What Remains to Be Done

Fethullah Gülen’s generation laid a foundation of schools, dialogue centers, and charitable initiatives that have already improved countless lives. Yet the vision of Hizmet remains unfinished and evolving. The future depends on whether followers can preserve the spirit of service without self-interest in an age of polarization and misinformation.

To carry Hizmet forward, its participants must:

  1. Recommit to Education: Expand access to high-quality, values-based education, especially in underserved communities.
  2. Deepen Dialogue: Build bridges not only among faiths, but also between technology and ethics, youth and elders, wealth and need.
  3. Protect Integrity: Remain transparent, accountable, and humble—avoiding politicization or personality-centered interpretations.
  4. Embrace Innovation: Use digital tools to reach hearts and minds globally while preserving sincerity and authenticity.
  5. Live the Ethic of Service: Demonstrate, through quiet acts of goodness, that compassion and knowledge are stronger than fear and division.

Conclusion

From the dawn of agriculture to the digital age, humanity’s greatest achievements have sought to bring peace and prosperity to all. The Hizmet Movement stands in that same lineage—continuing the universal mission to serve humanity through knowledge, love, and cooperation.

If earlier revolutions gave the world food, law, science, and technology, Hizmet’s contribution is subtler yet equally vital: a moral revolution, reminding humanity that progress without compassion is incomplete. Its legacy will endure as long as individuals continue to live its simplest teaching—to serve others is to serve God and the peace of the world.

Fethullah Gülen: President Erdogan is suffering from power poisoning

Mr. Erdogan’s witch-hunt in Turkey accelerated with the globalization of the Hizmet movement. When he closed the doors to activities such as language and culture festivals, other countries welcomed them. When Mr. Erdogan urged Turkish ambassadors to lobby their respective foreign governments to help close down schools started by Hizmet participants, those governments refused to go along.

The view from Brussels

The idea in Brussels, like among all sound-minded people here in Turkey, rather, is that the Erdoğan government is using the “parallel state” conspiracy theory as a pretext to suppress the investigation into the gravest bribery and corruption charges in the history of the country and destroy the achievements of the last 10 years in terms of democracy and the rule of law.

Gulen, a Secret Cardinal?

The Turkish government needs to understand that this kind of crazy makes it much less likely that the U.S. will extradite Gulen. His lawyers can point to this kind of demented paranoia as evidence that the Turkish justice system can’t be trusted to give him a fair trial. Most U.S. judges are likely to agree.
