Abant Platform calls for ‘respect for sacred’ in Africa meeting

The 32nd Abant Platform, which took place in Addis Ababa over the weekend, confirmed its commitment to the respect for sacred values and the encouragement of freedom of religion by international and regional organizations.
In a joint meeting with the African Union, the Abant Platform hosted 155 distinguished participants from 15 countries in the capital of Ethiopia.
The United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) decision on the struggle against intolerance toward different religions was a common talking point at the meeting to promote respect for the sacred. The Abant Platform said that freedom of expression and respect for sacred values are complimentary and that the former does not mean the freedom to attack sacred values.
The Abant Platform also urged the media to play a constructive role in the protection of respect for sacred values and called on all governments, nongovernmental organizations and civil society institutions to take a stance defending respect for the sacred.

Conceptual contradictions when it comes to rhetoric about ‘parallel state’
.In the wake of the Dec. 17 corruption operations that took place in Turkey, the government removed and changed such an extraordinarily high number of people from their positions in the police force, the justice system and the national education structure that these changes certainly would not have been possible in a state of law. An attempt was made to see these changes happen within the framework of heavy propaganda about the concept of the existence of a “parallel state.”

As a reader of Gulen’s thinking and a keen observer of the movement, I am convinced that they are aware of the viability of multiple approaches to resolve our global issues as well as the locally troubling scenarios. So to accuse and incriminate a movement that is based on the Islamic notion of hizmet (service) of a coup to topple a civilian rule is unfair, unjust and politically motivated for all practical reasons.
Rule of law casualty of AKP-Gulen conflict
The AKP government thinks that by labeling corruption investigations and operations as a “coup” and calling those behind them as “parallel state” that it has found a justifiable way to interfere with the judiciary. Otherwise the government would not have submitted a draft bill to the parliament that totally eliminates the functional independence of the judiciary bureaucracy and promotes the minister of justice, who represents the executive branch, to the status of single decision-maker.
