International Summit: Women’s perspectives on UN post-2015 development agenda

The Journalists and Writers Foundation is organizing a two-day international summit entitled “Women’s Perspectives on UN Post-2015 Development Agenda” in Istanbul, which will be held by  on May 31-June 1, 2014.

The summit, also called as Istanbul Summit, aims to provide a platform for networking and experience-sharing for parliamentarians, NGOs and specialists from around the world and to give opportunities to express their views and policy recommendations on the UN Post 2015 Development Agenda. As the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approaches this summit specifically aims to highlight women’s perspectives, experiences and opinions on the UN development goals.

The summit will consist of both plenary and 8 parallel sessions. The parallel sessions are aimed to facilitate an in-depth discussion of the specific practices and methods employed by NGOs of diverse nature, sharing experiences and challenges that are met on the road. Discussions will be held in interactive panel format where all participants are encouraged to join the conversation on the following issues:

1. Poverty
2. Women’s Empowerment
3. Health
4. Environmental Sustainability
5. Education
6. Food Security, Water Supply and Sanitation
7. Economic Development
8. Peace and Good Governance

A special session of women parliamentarians from around the world will be held as one of the parallel sessions, where MDG progress and commitments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of respective countries will be discussed.

Mother of three arrested with baby as police fail to locate teacher husband

A mother of three in the western province of Izmir, Fadime Danışman was arrested along with her 8-month-old baby after police failed to locate her husband, a teacher by profession, as part of an investigation into the Gülen movement.

PM Erdoğan once defended Hizmet, said it was Feb. 28 [military coup] victim

Prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has recently accused the faith-based Hizmet movement inspired by Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen of cooperating with coup perpetrators during the Feb. 28, 1997 post-modern coup era, defended the same movement at a parliamentary coup commission in 2012, when he said the movement’s followers had been victimized during the coup.

Shocking change and disappointed hearts…

Since Dec. 17, Erdoğan’s discourse has become more and more strict and a major smear campaign has been initiated by the pro-government media against the Hizmet movement, which has been active in education activities all around the world. The Hizmet movement and the followers of Hizmet have never been affiliated with violence or any other crime-related issues. This was proven as a result of a judicial process.
