3-month-old with oral disease also under arrest as parents imprisoned over coup charges

Under arrest along with his mother since April 27, three-month-old Betul A. has been suffering from oral thrush in prison, her grandfather told Turkish media.

Betul’s mother, Melek, a former teacher at an Izmir school which was closed the government as part of an investigation into the Gulen movement, was put in pre-trial detention in Sakran prison over Gulen links.

With her father, Ali İhsan also under arrest over similar charges, Betul is kept under mother’s care in prison.

The government accuses of masterminding the July 15, 2016 coup attempt and has already arrested more than 50,000 with alleged or real ties to the movement since then.

“I don’t know what are the accusations raised against my daughter and son-in-law. We are not able to afford a lawyer either. My granddaughter’s medicine is finished. She risks being caught an infection through wounds in her mouth. She needs treatment,” her grandfather Mehmet K. said in an interview with Hurriyet.

Her aunt Zeynep B. added that Betul’s treatment was left uncompleted after she was taken with her mother.

Turkish government defiant as battle over prep schools rises

Both the government and the Gülen movement have raised the stakes in the debate over a plan to regulate private prep schools, or dershanes. As Turkey’s war on Gulen escalates, so does impact on Africa

While critics say that Gülen is at best a cult figure, he is considered by many the legitimate spiritual leader of an Islamic movement that is focused on humanitarian service – hence the common name Hizmet – as well as interfaith dialogue and education.

Erdogan is transforming Turkey into a totalitarian prison

In Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the tweet has been turned into a crime, and a troubled democracy is being turned into a dictatorship. The Fall of Turkey

Western officials have preferred to raise concerns over the steady dismantling of Turkey’s free institutions only privately with their counterparts in Ankara. This approach has failed. That failure has left many millions of pro-democracy Turks to fend for themselves, while a once-fringe ideological element in the AKP, reared on Islamist supremacism, has been emboldened.
