Turkish imam in Australia mobilizes worshippers to spy on Gülen movement

Salih Arslan, a member of the board of the Ankara-funded Süleymaniye mosque in the Australian city of Perth, was revealed to have incited worshippers to spy on followers of the Gülen movement and affiliated institutions, including schools.
Arslan is heard asking people to report “every kind of information” regarding Gülen movement activities in Australia to Turkish consulates, in video footage captured at the Süleymaniye mosque.
Consulates should even be informed of who buys advertising in movement-affiliated newspapers, Arslan underlined.
According to Arslan, the video was recorded after a religious gathering at the mosque in Perth, the capital city of the state of Western Australia and the fourth most populous city in Australia.
Süleymaniye mosque is funded by Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), a controversial institution that has been mired in allegations of espionage against Turkish expatriates critical of the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The Turkish government has pinned the blame for the July 15 coup attempt on the Gülen movement and has launched a worldwide witch hunt against its sympathisers.
German weekly Der Spiegel said last week that the Turkish government has been spying on its own citizens in 35 countries with the help of its diplomatic missions and mosques. Diyanet played a crucial role in the spying activities, asking its overseas personnel to profile movement supporters.

The Journalists and Writers Foundation’s (GYV), of which Fethullah Gülen is the honorary president, issued a statement on Wednesday slamming the government-orchestrated arrest warrant for Gülen as a government election tactic.

Gulen is an Islamic cleric whom President Erdogan of Turkey considers as his strongest rival. After the botched July 15 coup, Erdogan launched a massive crackdown on the investments of Gulen’s followers. He blamed Gulen for the coup, but he has denied the allegation.
Toward a party state
At this point, the only thing Erdoğan can do is manufacture false charges and evidence against the Hizmet movement, which wouldn’t be persuasive. In a normal democratic state where the rule of law is cherished, there must be concrete evidence to press charges against anyone, and those so charged are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty. In a party state, however, imaginary charges are first voiced and then meddlesome public authorities manufacture crimes and criminals to fit those charges.

Hanım Büşra Erdal was subjected to a strip search at the police station and humiliated by police officers when she was taken from her prison cell as she was preparing to leave the prison. A strip search is allowed only if circumstances so warrant. “She is a journalist and was taken from the prison. She was already going through routine checks and searches in prison,” her lawyer said.
