Human Rights Watch (HRW) criticizes Cabinet ruling on Kimse Yok Mu

The nonprofit Kimse Yok Mu’s status to collect donations without state was officially revoked with a cabinet ruling on October 2nd.
Human Rights Watch released a statement on Saturday. The statement pointed out that restricting the activities of an association or a foundation must rest on legal bases. They blasted the government for arbitrary action against Kimse Yok Mu. It read, “The cabinet ruling against the Kimse Yok Mu aid organization, means a breach of Turkey’s domestic law and its international obligations.”
Human Rights Watch (HRW) Turkey researcher Emma Sinclair-Webb said that activities of any associations now might be restricted only by a court order, and added that “it seems that ruling doesn’t have any legal basis.”
Sinclair-Webb continued: “revoking and limiting an organization or association must only be by court order and the court order must be based on focused proof.”
In a blunt violation of Turkish laws and ethical norms, authorities removed nearly 100 police chiefs, who were either involved in the graft raids or pose a possible risk to the government. Two additional prosecutors were appointed to supervise the case, a move mostly interpreted by experts as an attempt to control the judicial process. The government has launched an unprecedented witch-hunt in public institutions and continues to purge any bureaucrat it believes could be cooperative with prosecutors in the graft investigation. Four ministers whose names were linked to these investigations refused to step down despite calls from the opposition.
Turkish schools are being closed down
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu stated he had ordered the closure of Turkish schools in 160 countries, arguing that the officials of those schools had sent letters to the leaders of foreign countries in which they complained about the Turkish government. The closure of these schools is a serious step, but the reason for the closure is not based on real evidence.
Erdoğan ‘does not grasp’ separation of powers, MEP says
Andrew Duff, a Liberal Democrat member of the European Parliament, also accused the prime minister, whom he said was “clearly elected democratically,” of not ruling democratically. Duff said the aggravated language that exposes serious rifts between the AK Party and the Gülen movement risks destabilizing Turkey.

Participants in the 33rd Abant Platform, which ended on Sunday in the northwestern town of Akçakoca, agreed that Turkey has lost its direction in both its domestic and foreign policy, saying the way to rectify this is to restore its commitment to the accession process into the European Union and the rule of law at home.
