40,000 people reported to authorities for being Gülen followers since July 15

As many as 40,000 people have been reported to the Ankara Police Department for being followers of the faith-based Gülen movement since a failed coup attempt on July 15, the Haber Türk daily reported on Tuesday.

Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan launched a war against the Gülen movement following the eruption of a corruption scandal in late 2013 in which senior government members were implicated, and carried their continuing crackdown on the movement and its sympathizers to a new and controversial level after a failed coup attempt in July.

Although the movement strongly denies having any role in the corruption probe and the coup attempt, the government accuses it of having masterminded both despite the lack of any tangible evidence.

President Erdoğan has frequently called on the Turkish people to report followers of the Gülen movement to the police and prosecutors’ offices so that they can be prosecuted for their links to the movement.

Based on police sources, Haber Türk said most of the reports received by the police were false and based on personal problems and hostilities among people.

“There are fathers who report their sons [over Gülen links], wives who report their husbands and neighbors reporting neighbors. We certainly process all notices and separate out the false ones. If there is an obvious denigration [against someone], we launch an investigation against the person for pressing false accusations against others,” a police officer who wanted to remain anonymous told the daily.

Erdogan: A saint elsewhere, outside Turkey’s shores?

On a recent trip to Spain, I picked a copy of the International New York Times, and saw a story that shocked me greatly. It said Mr Erdogan had ordered the release of 38,000 prisoners serving various jail terms, for different offences, in order to make space for the so-called coup plotters who had no space in Turkey’s overflowing prison. I was totally shocked by the news because I can’t imagine a situation where convicted criminals are being set free just so political opponents can be locked up.

The turmoil in Turkey – The terror threat is real and is made worse by Erdogan’s paranoia

Mr. Erdogan’s own Islamist and autocratic tendencies have also compounded the country’s vulnerability. Since an attempted coup last summer, the President has purged thousands of police officers and soldiers, and the resulting talent and resources gap may have damaged Ankara’s counterterror capabilities.
