Half a million people in Turkey subject to prosecution over Gülen links: ministry
Date posted: March 4, 2019
According to Ministry of Justice statistics, the total number of Turkish citizens who have faced investigation since July 2016 over links to the faith-based Gülen movement on accusations coup involvement and terrorism exceeded half a million in January.
A total of 500,650 people have been investigated over real and alleged links to the Gülen movement, the Cumhuriyet daily reported on Monday.
Supporters of the movement are accused of coup participation since the Turkish government holds the movement responsible for a failed coup in July 2016 and considers it a terrorist organization.
According to the same statistics, 30,947 people are currently jailed over links to the movement. Arrest warrants for another 22,000 suspects at large have been issued.
A total of 2,060 who are under investigation are under the age of 18, the official report states.
Burma and Thailand flagrantly violated Furkan Sökmen’s human rights by caving in to pressure from Ankara and deporting him despite his claim for asylum and the real risk of ill-treatment and an unfair trial in Turkey.
Gülen’s letter to Gül
Koru told Gülen to express his feelings in a letter. The scholar wrote this letter on Dec. 22. Koru took the letter to its addressee, the president. He met with the prime minister the same day in Ankara and told him about his impressions from his contact with Gülen. I mean to say, there is not “bargaining” or “mediation.” There is only a “goodwill initiative” here.

Notably, all this comes while the tension between the government, especially Erdoğan himself, and the Gülen Movement is deepening. In fact, both groups form part of the “religious conservatives,” and used to be allies against the old secularist guard. However, their differences have become increasingly pronounced and have resulted recently in an increasingly bitter war of words.
What is lacking in democratization package is democracy itself
This time’s so-called democratization package to soon be submitted to Parliament is an overt effort to make judicial proceedings nearly impossible if the consent of a governor or one of their deputies has not been granted. A prosecutor who wants to start an operation will first go to the governor (read: the government) in order to get a license to use law enforcement bodies in any sort of operation. This move is not only against democratic norms and the principles of transparency and the rule of law, but is also a clear reflection of a defensive mechanism in light of mounting corruption and graft claims surrounding senior government officials.
