Leaked photo shows 11 hijabi women, 2 babies in Bursa prison on terror, coup charges
Date posted: March 2, 2019
A leaked photo from the Bursa prison shows a total of eleven women with two babies being held being held under arrest for months on terror and coup charges.
According to Cevheri Güven, a Turkish journalist, there are two medical doctors, and two primary school teachers in the picture.
The women are accused of having a membership in the Gülen movement, accused by the Turkish authorities to mastermind a coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
The movement denies any involvement.
The picture was reportedly taken by the Bursa prison managamen and it has been circulating online in the legal community.
It’s illegal to publish photos taken by a prison management, but Turkey Purge broke the rules to get the image out.
More than 160,000 people have passed through police custody, of which 60,000 were remanded in prison pending trial over Gulen links since the summer of 2016.

Turkish academics exiled to Germany remain in fear
Last year’s failed coup against Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan resulted in a crackdown on scholars and universities, and has divided the nation’s diaspora. Intense polarisation of Turkish diaspora, plus online harassment, means refugee scholars feel they are being watched.
Turkish business suffers under Erdogan’s post-coup Gulen purge
Critics of the ruling AKP expect it to sell Gulen-linked companies to government allies in the business world at a large discount. In mid-October the AKP-linked Metro Holding applied to the TMSF to acquire all of Koza Ipek Holding’s shares. Akin Ipek, the fugitive former owner of the conglomerate, asked on Twitter how Koza Ipek’s $600 million in cash and $20 billion in mining assets could be acquired by a comparatively unimpressive entity. Metro Holding’s capital comes to just over $95 million.
Turkey Faces Its Iran 1979 Moment
Turkey is at a pivotal point in its history following the failed coup attempt of July 15. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, having survived the coup plot, won fresh legitimacy and gained a new ally: religious fervor in the streets. Mr. Erdogan can use this impetus either to become an executive-style president, or he can encourage the forces of religion to take over the country, crowning himself as an Islamic leader.
