Police wait at hospital to detain cancer patient

An anonymous Twitter account aiming to share human rights violations in Turkey announced on Saturday that police in Ankara were waiting at a hospital to detain a woman who is undergoing chemotherapy.

Mevhibe Altıntaş, a teacher who is suffering from leukemia, is receiving treatment at Memorial Hospital in Ankara. However, as of the time of writing, police say the woman is supposed to be taken to the province of Aksaray as part of an investigation. No reason for her expected detention was cited.

Sharing this ordeal on his Twitter account, Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Mahmut Tanal said that according to the law, suspects can be questioned at home without being taken to a police station. He urged officials to adopt a more human approach to this kind of situation.

Over 135,000 people, including thousands within the military, have been purged due to their real or alleged connection to the Gülen movement since the coup attempt, according to a statement by the labor minister on Jan. 10. As of Feb. 1, 89,775 people were being held without charge, with an additional 43,885 in pre-trial detention due to their alleged links to the movement.

Followers of this liberal U.S.-based cleric, Gulen, were scapegoated for the July 2016 coup. Tens of thousands of police officers and security officials were fired and even arrested, simply for being followers of Gulen, an opponent of ISIS. The Turkish President seems willing to blame everyone but ISIS, or even offer much of an anti-ISIS campaign.

Erdoğan has been trying to dodge the damaging impact of the corruption scandals by using Hizmet as a scapegoat. Gülen, an ardent supporter of transparency and accountability in government, was critical of Erdoğan government’s efforts to stall the corruption investigations. Speaking to the BBC on Monday, Gülen said that the massive corruption investigations that have shaken the government cannot be covered up no matter how hard the government tries to derail the probes — not even by blaming the scandal on what the prime minister has called the “parallel state,” a veiled reference to the Hizmet movement inspired by Gülen.

The Hizmet movement “revives civil society in a modern state,” he says, as he emphasizes that the movement also adheres to the values of the Muslim world. “Having Hizmet is very important for the Turkish state. It will help the state to renew its values,” the Tunisian politician comments.

Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who has inspired a worldwide religious network that defends peaceful coexistence through dialogue and education, is currently being targeted in a government-sponsored smear campaign that is reminiscent of, and even harsher than, the Feb. 28, 1997 coup period.
