Members of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) gathered in Washington DC for a follow up discussion on the Gulen Movement on October 19, 2012. The group’s director Dr. Bulent Aliriza hosted the discussion… and said that the Gulen movement, perhaps more than any other in overall Turkish picture, has been the subject of a great deal of discussion, criticism, suspicion, in spite of all the good work that is being done…

Presenter Dr. Alp Aslandogan is the President of the Alliance for Shared Values, a New York-based non-profit umbrella organization for cultural and interfaith dialogue organizations around the U.S., and Board Member of the Gulen Institute.

CSIS hosted Dr. Aslandogan first time on June 17, 2009 for a presentation on “A Brief History and Overview of the Gulen Movement“.

Focusing on education but also active in many other fields, the faith-inspired movement around Muslim scholar, preacher, and social advocate Fethullah Gulen has recently attracted even greater interest in the U.S. Dr. Aslandogan discussed the history, vision and activities of the Hizmet Movement, as it is referred to by its members, or the Gulen Movement, as it is more generally known. He then responded to questions and comments by participants.

Below is the video of the presentation.

An email included in Wikileaks’ Monday publication of the leaked emails of Berat Albayrak, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son-in-law and Turkey’s minister of energy, shows that Albayrak fabricated news with pro-government people in the United States in order to defame the Gülen movement in the US media.

Open Letter to the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)

While known as a devoted organization to aim providing insights, affirmations, and appreciation of Muslims in North America, which would hopefully replace prejudicial, arrogant, dialectical confrontation towards the Muslims in North America, with mutual respect and dialogical encounter, it is so sad to see ISNA supporting an initiative to demonize another Muslim society which aims to promote Islam and mutual understanding and tolerance between cultures all over the world.

We can build better tomorrows by not discounting historical truths, and instead face these truths and reconcile with them when necessary. While doing so, we can of course pay the tribute necessary to the cultures and the peoples that have helped us arrive at this point.

Who is Fethullah Gulen? (by National Catholic Reporter)

By blaming Fethullah Gulen and the Gulen movement for the coup attempt, Mr. Erdogan’s authoritarian tendencies have only increased as witnessed by the tens of thousands arrested and detained, and the radical curtailing of free speech. It now appears that in Mr. Erdogan’s hands Turkey’s future and that of the Middle East will be less democratic, less stable and more tumultuous than ever.

Former US envoys to Ankara say Erdoğan doing great harm to democracy

“Whatever his achievements over the past decade, Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is destroying his country’s parlous democracy. That is a profound problem for Turks and Turkey’s Western allies. Staying silent, out of fear that speaking out would harm some short-term interests, risks Turkey’s longer-term stability.”
