34,000 teachers, 5,882 academics, 1,372 university employees dismissed since July 15, 2016

A total of 34,000 teachers have been dismissed along with 5,882 academics and 1,372 administrative personnel at universities as part of the Turkish government’s post-coup crackdown, a recent report said.
Human Rights Association’s (IHD) Istanbul branch released a report on rights violations in the education sector, during a press conference on Thursday.
The number of dismissed teachers has hit 34,000, that of academics 5,882 and university personnel 1,372, the report said.
Meanwhile, the number of teachers who committed suicide after losing their jobs has reached 50, IHD officials said.
Turkey survived a military coup attempt on July 15, 2016 that killed 249 people and wounded more than a thousand others. The government declared a State of Emergency days after the failed putsch and have issued dozens of emergency decrees, known as KHK, to purge its critics from state bodies.
Those dismissed were accused of having links to either the Gulen movement, outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) or other alleged terror groups.

Gülen urges patience over prep schools row
Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen expressed unhappiness over government [in Turkey] plans to abolish educational institutions that assist high school students to prepare for the national university admission examination and urged people to be patient in the face of this move, which is interpreted as a blow to education in the country.

There have been many moves of interference with an investigation where four ministers and their kids are being accused and concrete evidence and documents present a grave situation. In these first days of the investigation, the police chiefs and authorities were removed, new prosecutors were appointed, police authorities were reappointed all over Turkey, everybody covering the issue including the media is being strongly suppressed, innocent people are being insulted and accused of forming a gang. All of this is being done to cover up the corruption.

Notwithstanding such aims and the benefits to Turkish citizens and others around the globe who enjoy scholarship and the benefits of quality education, all such pro-Gülen educational organisations, including the ones established in Nigeria have been branded as enemies by the Turkish government. “I have never heard that the Turkish schools in Nigeria have done anything illegally since the time they began operation in Nigeria; I attended one of such excellent schools so, I see no reason why the school should be closed,” Mohamed said.
Truth and reconciliation in post-Erdoğan era
One way to repair the damage dealt by the Erdoğan government in the last couple of years and to provide some form of closure for the dark period of Erdoğan’s third term in government is to set up a truth and reconciliation commission. Without discounting the role of the criminal justice system, a truth commission can be utilized in a complementary role to help citizens move on with their lives in Turkey after colossal wrongdoings in the government.
